One must save species, and the only way one can do that is by saving habitats, the environment in which animals live and by saving them, so enable animals to save themselves.
THE KIMBERLEY AREA – WEST AUSTRALIA
The Kimberley has many wilderness areas and a huge variety of wonderful wildlife. Unfortunately, many native animals throughout the country get killed or injured as a result of human activity, such as road accidents, domestic pets, habitat destruction and - above all - aerial baiting against vermin.
WILDLIFE AT ROY’S RETREAT
The secret of successful wildlife caring is to copy nature while providing natural conditions whenever possible. As wildlife carers we feel responsible for the animals’ welfare although the job is very demanding.
HABITAT DESTRUCTION
The alteration in the balance of nature and habitat destruction by man has caused most of our wildlife problems, and that is the reason why many animals need human care. Their natural food and shelter disappear when the area is cleared, the biggest disaster being the deliberately lit bushfires.
A HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT
For animals to live and breed successfully, nature provides the perfectly balanced nutrition required to protect them from diseases.
A habitat must provide all the requirements needed for animals to survive, such as food, water and shelter. There are so many different types of habitats like:
• rainforest
• wetland
• grassland
• desert etc.
but each habitat has to supply food and shelter for the animals. In return, wildlife controls:
• insect pests
• pollinating flowers
• dispersing seeds
• pruning foliage and fertilising soil
